THE MILLENNIAL GENERATION (GEN Y) AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (EQ)
Reports are starting to emerge suggesting that students from our current generation of college attendees (Gen Y) are showing a rising overdose of inflated sense of self, and acting out in aggressive ways when rejected or criticized.
As one of the “Top Ten Anderson & Anderson Anger Management Providers for the First Quarter of 2007”, some of my current clientele are of college-age. I am finding that there is a recurring self-centered attitude that shows an elevated ego with statements such as; “I like to be the center of attention”, or “I needed to make a cell phone call, and the teacher got bent out of shape”. These same clients with the “me first attitude” become aggressive at school and in social situations. They pay no attention to the feelings of others, threatening others’ rights, and violating or offending the rights of others.
How does Emotional Intelligence (EQ) fit into all of this? EQ relates to the ability to understand one’s own feelings and behaviors as well as the capacity to sense the feelings and needs of others. Then to be able to utilize this information in a way that enhances interpersonal relationships. Empathy, compassion, cooperation and forgiveness are components of EQ. Without these emotions Gen Y young adults cannot connect to each other.
This narcissistic behavior, if not addressed, could become the norm. This concerns me. (I refer to Emotional Intelligence and the affect on young adults on my blog http://www.anger411.com/ as well).
It is important to recognize in those we love and care about whether or not they are exhibiting the “it’s all about me” attitude. Now is the time to introduce into their lives a skill building program that assists in learning direct, honest, and appropriate expressions of thoughts, feelings and behaviors when dealing with others. The Anderson & Anderson model is a program that teaches one to be direct and honest in communicating with others without violating their rights.
